I think I’m slowly getting the hang of gouache and the painting process again. I still struggled a bit, but not nearly as much as my previous painting of pears.
I enjoyed doing this one. Painting those red peppers with their green stalks was especially fun. ![]()

Step 1 – The sketch. Don’t fall in love with your sketch, meaning don’t spend too much time on it since you’ll be painting over it anyway. Just a simple rough sketch will do. Be sure to include the cast shadows (shadows on the surface) and form shadows (shadows on the objects). This is very important.

Step 2 – Block in your darks. Since Gouache is an opaque medium, you work from dark to light, meaning you start off with your darks, then gradually build up to the lights. Don’t worry so much about painting within the lines since you can fix any mistakes later on. At this stage, be sure to keep the paint thin.

That’s all I have for this one. I got caught up in the painting and forgot to photograph it again. Ha ha! Sorry about that.
As mentioned above, I struggled with the painting a bit so I had to backtrack and correct my mistakes, which is partly why I chose not to photograph any other steps after this one. Once I completely get the hang of the medium and the process again, I’ll make sure to photograph every step and describe it in detail, including how to mix the colors.

WHAT TO DO NOW?
